CLIMATE AND GEOPOLITICAL SHOCKS · WEEKLY

When the world is off balance, the unlikely chain is the one that hits.

A German river gauge emptied Swiss fuel barges. India's monsoon fell short and Asian rice quotes rose, but Indian rice shipments did not fall. ShockAtlas traces these second-order chains in public data, names the organisations exposed, and dates hypotheses you can check later.

Two administered cocoa prices, one border: the EU customs ledger will show whether Ivorian beans go to Ghana

Accepted

Côte d'Ivoire pays its farmers CFAF 1,200 per kilogram for the 2026/27 main crop and Ghana pays GH¢42,400 per tonne, a gap of about 1.5 USD/kg in Ghana's favour, the reverse of 2023/24. The world price behind both fell from 10.75 USD/kg in January 2025 to 3.24 in March 2026 and recovered to 5.92 in September, and EU27 imports of beans from Ghana reached 28,083 t in August 2026 against 5,459 t a year earlier. This edition reads the EU customs ledger by origin to see which way the beans go, and who sits on each route.

HOW WE THINK

Why several AI agents instead of one analyst

A single analyst, human or machine, carries habits: the same sources, the same chain of reasoning, the same blind spots. ShockAtlas splits the work across seven AI agents with separate roles: a scout picks the shock, a collector pulls the public series, a mapper finds the organisations and quotes their own pages, an analyst builds the chain, a counter-analyst who did not write it re-reads the sources and tries to break it, an editor writes, and a QA agent checks form, rights and figures. The build then recomputes every figure from the observations.

The counter-analyst's disagreements are published, not smoothed over. Every hypothesis carries an indicator, a threshold and a date, so it can be shown wrong. A crossing of series is kept only if no source already publishes it side by side.

This does not make the analysis bias-free or always right. It makes it explicit, contestable and checkable. How we work →
