A 2027 BNSF shuttle train costs $428 a car per trip; resale pays $600 in winter and under $213 from April
Acceptedby an independent counter-analyst, 4 Nov 2026
In 30 seconds
- What happened
- BNSF sold its January 2027 grain trains at about the price of the past two years, and resale prices for rail cars then fell back, as they do most autumns.
- Why it matters
- At October's resale prices, a train holder gets its money back on January to March trips but not on trips from April, unless trains run faster than they have.
- What to watch
- Whether resale bids for January 2027 trains reach 1,000 dollars a car by the end of December, or stay at 600 or below.

BNSF's January 2027 yearlong shuttle trains sold on 23 September at 1.3 million dollars each, within the range of its 140-train programme since 2024: about 428 dollars per car per trip at the turns BNSF is running. On 22 October brokers bid 600 dollars per car for January to March 2027 placements and 175 to 212.5 for April to September, after the usual autumn slide. A holder recovers the premium on winter trips and loses it on the rest, unless December brings back the 2025 winter.

Why these three series belong together
A holder of a BNSF yearlong shuttle train can, each month, load its own grain, resell the placement through a broker, or cancel with a penalty. Three public series frame that choice: what a placement resells for (BNSF next-month bid), whether the railroad is short of cars (BNSF and UP shuttle loadings), and the demand meant to fill winter trains (China's soybean commitments); auction results come from USDA's Grain Transportation Report.
What the auction and the resale market did
On 23 September 2026 BNSF sold thirteen trains starting January 2027 at an average 1.3 million dollars. That is inside the range since BNSF cut its programme from 155 to 140 trains in August 2024: from 595,000 for January 2026 starts, the low, to 1.4 and 1.5 million in March 2026 for August to October 2026 starts, and 1.7 million for September starts. Those March auctions cleared while the resale bid was 275 [F78] to 525 [F79] dollars per car, so the gap between auction and resale is not new. USDA calls the 140-train supply scarce; BNSF told shippers in 2024 that it matches its 2018 to 2020 average.
BNSF's next-month bid reached 1,300 dollars per car above tariff on 3 September [F1], was 700 in the auction week [F31], 62.5 on 15 October [F32] and 275 on 22 October [F3], against 866.67 a year earlier [F4]. It fell from 976.04 to −66.67 in autumn 2021 [F72] [F73], from 1,177.78 to −116.67 in 2023 [F74] [F75] and from 1,783.33 to 212.5 in 2024 [F76] [F77]: 2025 was the exception. The January 2027 train was first quoted at 550 [F7], then 600 [F8]; UP's at 150 [F10].
What the rail flow and China's buying did
There is no rail squeeze. BNSF and UP loaded 14,121 shuttle cars in the week ending 23 October [F33], against 13,213 in 2025 [F34] but 14,777 in 2024 [F36] and 16,429 in 2021 [F35]. BNSF's unfilled grain car orders stood at 735 [F43], against a peak of 14,299 in January 2023 [F44]; UP's at 48 [F45].
China had committed to 15,074,187 tons of 2026/27 US soybeans by 22 October [F47], against none a year earlier [F48]. At the same week of 2021 to 2024 it held 11,125,295 [F50] to 18,490,144 tons [F52]: a normal year after an empty one.
The mechanism, and what else could explain it
Hypothesis · The auction price reads best as the level of a fixed 140-train programme meeting peak demand for autumn starts, not as a bet on September's spike or on China. The spike did come first, and the series cannot show it carried no weight in the bids.
Hypothesis · What matters to a holder is the winter. If December looks like 2024, the January train trades at 206.25 [F16] to 550 [F15] and resale stays below cost; if it looks like 2025, it trades at 1,075 [F12] to 1,500 [F11] and the winter trips pay for the year. China's buying could push toward the second path, but Sinograin's reported winter cargoes load at the Gulf, not in the Pacific Northwest, where these trains go.
Who sits on the chain
BNSF collected 17.2 million dollars from the September auction whatever the winter brings. Scoular runs a shuttle loader on the BNSF main line; United Grain's unit-train terminals in the Dakotas and Montana feed its Vancouver, Washington export terminal. American Commercial Barge Line runs the competing river route to the Gulf.
Hypothesis · CHS, Agtegra and Columbia Grain International run many northern-plains shuttle loaders and are likely holders. Their origins have no winter barge outlet, since the Upper Mississippi above Lynxville closed from 8 December 2025 to 15 March 2026: an unrecovered premium there is sunk.
A conditional sensitivity, not a forecast
Scenario · At 1.3 million dollars, a 110-car train costs 428 dollars per car per trip at 2.3 monthly turns, 365 at the 2.7 BNSF plans. On the 22 October curve, 600 for January to March 2027 [F8] and 175 to 212.5 for April to September, the nine quoted months average 325 per car: about 103 dollars per car-trip, or 11,000 dollars per train-trip, below cost. Breaking even on resale would take 3.03 turns a month, against 2.37 reported to the Pacific Northwest; if October to December 2027 traded at January's 600, an assumption, the threshold falls to 2.50. For the February to March 2027 auctions, the 2024/25 programme averaged 932,000 dollars, 282 per car-trip.
What would change this reading
Hypothesis · A January 2027 bid of 1,000 dollars or more by 31 December would put the winter on the 2025 path; 600 or less, on the 2024 path. A close between 601 and 999 matches neither past December and is read here as the 2024 path until the bid crosses 1,000.
Hypothesis · Three readings would overturn the arithmetic: Pacific Northwest turns of 3.0 or more in early 2027, April to September 2027 bids re-priced at 428 or more, or BNSF's February to March 2027 auctions averaging below 1 million dollars, which would mean the railroad, not the holders, takes the next revision.

Open hypotheses
| Hypothesis | Confidence | Horizon | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| If the BNSF secondary bid for January 2027 delivery is at or below 600 dollars per car in the last week of December 2026, as the January 2025 train traded in December 2024, the BNSF next-month bid stays below 428 dollars per car, the premium per car-trip of the 2027 trains, in most weeks of January to March 2027. | MEDIUM | 2027-03-31 | OPEN |
| If the BNSF secondary bid for January 2027 delivery reaches 1,000 dollars per car or more by 31 December 2026, as the January 2026 train did in December 2025, the BNSF next-month bid stays at or above 700 dollars per car in the weeks of January 2027, so 2027 trains resell their first-quarter placements above their 428 dollars per car-trip cost. | LOW | 2027-01-31 | OPEN |
| If BNSF offers no more than 140 shuttle trains for 2027/28, its February to March 2027 yearlong auctions for August to October 2027 starts average at least 1 million dollars per train, whatever the winter secondary bids do; an average below 1 million would mean the railroad, not the holders, absorbs the revision. | MEDIUM | 2027-03-31 | OPEN |
